October 21st
So when I last left you we were a mere days away from what would ulitmately be the final game played at Shea Stadium (the house my boy Fed's grandfather built...my friend's grandfather worked on the construction of Shea and so, in a reference to the nickname of some other ballpark he always called it "The House My Grandfather Built".) I was there for the last game and ended up watching it in the luxury suite where all the old time Mets were. Aside from the devastating outcome of the game I still think that in the years to come I will begin to appreciate the day's experience. I knew practically everyone in the room and got sat with Yogi, Cleon Jones, Jerry Koosman, Darryl, Doc , Nail and even got to meet Mike Piazza. That is all I am going to say on that day as it is time to build up the bullpen, get Manny and start getting ready for the innaugural season at Citi Field.
After I was completely deflated on the second annual Black Sunday at Shea it was time to get right back to work. From that Monday on I have done signing and appearances with Tony Hawk, Mike Richter, Paul Blair, Roy White, Walt Frazier, Charlie Weis, YA Tittle, Reggie Jackson, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, Whitey Ford and Ron Blomberg (just to name a few)...suffice to say it has been a busy few weeks.
A few random thoughts on those signings:
-I enjoy the Tony Hawk public appearance more than any other. The fan base is made up almost entirely of kids and it is amazing to see the joy that he brings to them.
-I hate the Tony Hawk private signing more than any other. While I love hanging out with Tony there is nothing worse than getting hundreds of skateboard decks signed.
-I have said countless times on the blog that some guys just "get it"...Clyde Frazier gets it. No one loves talking hoops with fans more than Clyde and anytime he sees anyone (whether it is at the Garden or at an appearance or in the street) wearing his jersey he signs it for free.
-YA Tittle threw for 7 touchdowns in one game...Seven!
-I have been to Notre Dame close to ten times now and have yet to see a game.
-The DH rule is still terrible.
The end result of all those signing are a multifarious collection of tremendous pieces. Check out the New Arrival section of this site for images. This is an extremely exciting time of year...World Series, NFL, NHL..I guess?, soon to be tip-off of the NBA season (Lakers poised to win the West again), Phil Lesh 14 nights at the Nokia Theater, and , most importantly, we are two weeks from Election Day.
I will be trying my best to post as to close to daily as possible (easier said than done though) so keep checking back for updates. This Saturday we have Don Larsen appearing at the Steiner Sports Store...hope to see you there.
