Ex-players reminisce about doomed Giants Stadium

Long before he became one of the best all-purpose players in the history of the New York Jets, Bruce Harper would drive from his nearby home past the spot where Giants Stadium was rising out of a New Jersey swamp and wonder if he had what it took to play at football's highest level.

Stephen Baker's introduction to the stadium nearly ended his career, to hear him describe it.

JOE D. DIARY IS A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

By DAN KADISON | July 17, 2007

Joe DiMaggio kept a diary. Think of that for a moment.

Baseball legend Joe DiMaggio hobnobbed with superstars and even bedded Marilyn Monroe - but he spent some of the last years of his life chronicling every mundane moment in a stunning diary unveiled yesterday.

In what's being billed as the grand slam of artifacts about the former Yankee great, DiMaggio laboriously jotted down details about his daily life in more than 2,000 pages of handwritten notes between 1982 and 1993.

The diary, bound in 29 volumes, went on the auction block yesterday for a minimum bid of $1.5 million. The diary shows that while he married Monroe and set baseball's record 56-game hitting streak, the legendary slugger wasn't beyond recording what he ate one day in February 1992 - and even the $7 tip he left the waitress.

SIGNS OF DIMAGGIO'S GREATNESS

By BILL GALLO | July 17, 2007

I have not seen copies of Joe DiMaggio's diary, which is about to be auctioned off by Brandon Steiner. But I'm wondering if a certain incident is included in Joe's daily jottings, which he wrote in longhand.

On Nov. 5, 1992, at the second annual Rawlings Gold Glove Awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, I witnessed DiMag pay particular attention to a ball he was signing because it was owned by someone special.

Before the dinner, we were all given Rawlings baseballs with gold stitching, to mark a special occasion.

At the dinner, I was seated in good company. DiMaggio was at the head of the table, as always. Included in our group were Dr. Rock Positano, who was then affiliated with the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Rock was a good friend of Joe D's and has famed people like Henry Kissinger as his patients. Also there was Dick Burke, the owner of an Irish pub in Atlantic City and a close pal of Joe's.

The Detailed Life of DiMaggio, Minus Juicy Details

By Richard Sandomir | July 16, 2007

Joe DiMaggio kept a diary. Think of that for a moment.

The private DiMaggio — who spurned millions of dollars to write a tell-all autobiography but not the riches derived from signing bats or balls — dedicated parts of many days from 1982 to 1993 to recording his activities in a flowing script. You can almost imagine him at day’s end, maybe with his tie still knotted but his blazer hanging in the closet, summarizing his day.

It is not a juicy personal journal. Meals with pals, not his romances, were cited as he moved from his late 60s to his late 70s. A sampling of the entries showed pages filled with mundane details and occasionally interesting detours. They were set down on hotel and airline stationery, plain white or yellow legal paper, but never on personal letterhead. He ended entries as if submitting them for reimbursement: by itemizing his expenses.

“He’d bring them into my office, hand them to the office manager every month and say, ‘Tell Morris there’s good stuff in here for his book,’ ” said Morris Engelberg, DiMaggio’s lawyer. He added: “These writings really show who he is. He’s just a plain old Joe.”

The bat was signed for and owned by a former Gehrig teammate, and was kept in that family's collection for over 70 years, until it was sold to a private collector a few years ago. This bat has remained under lock and key for several years and now the collector has decided to sell in celebration of Gehrig's 80-year anniversary of winning his first American League MVP award.

The Anatomy of a Signing

By Jason Klein, July 6, 2006

It's more than just ink on a baseball or glossy photo. Every piece of authentic Steiner Sports memorabilia tells a story. The signed jersey on the wall, basketball on the mantle, and helmet sitting on top of the television were all signed by different players, at different times, under different conditions. Some were autographed under ideal circumstances within the comfort of the famous Steiner Sports conference room in Westchester, New York; others on the back of a car in a parking lot, in a hotel room during a road trip, or in a confetti-strewn street amid a championship celebration. How much of the story do collectors really know when it comes to the pieces they collect?

Just Remember The Moment

Just remember the moment. The image is a slam dunk, the words more hard-hitting than Mark McGwire going yard. The slogan is an appropriate one for Steiner Sports Marketing, whose impact in the memorabilia industry has been equivalent to John Starks' left handed jam over Michael Jordan and Horace Grant in Game 2 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals with 47.3 seconds remaining in the game that sent Madison Square Garden into a frenzy.
