Similar to in-season, multi-stage tournaments in European soccer, the NBA Cup's purpose was to bring increased significance and attention to mid-season games. There was increased motivation for the players in the in-season tournament as not only did the games count as regular-season games the winning team of the tournament also got a significant cash payout. The Nuggets would win the first two games of the tournament defeating the Mavericks and the Clippers but would lose the next two. The team showcased its dark blue alternate "5280" jerseys and played on their specially designed multicolored in-season court.
