Bat Dog Called Up to Triple-A, But it Doesn't Go as Planned

A day after getting called up with the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in order to provide a "spark," it was announced that "Rookie" and "Derby" - the Official Bat Dogs in the New York Yankees farm system - would be sent down to the Double-A Trenton Thunder.

The move comes after Rookie decided to play a little fetch mid-game:

Rookie's duty at this point was to retrieve the bat - which can be seen laying down the first base line. Unfortunately, he got a little distracted and thought that the umpire was playing fetch, so he retrieved the baseball from the pitcher instead. The bat boy ended up having to do double-duty. He noticed what was happening and sprinted over to collect the bat, covering for Rookie.

This bat-retrieving technique runs in the family for Rookie and Derby, so clearly they know what they're doing. It's just a tough break with unfortunate timing to go on a slump the day you're called up. But to have Rookie's back, we found video evidence of him from over three years ago retrieving his first bat. You definitely want to see this:

Retrieving bats is a honed skill that he has practiced over the past three years - and has become famous for. In fact, ESPN even made a full-feature E:60 on the duo in 2015.

Maybe someday Rookie and Derby get another shot at moving up the ranks, but until then you can expect to see them with the Thunder in Trenton, N.J.
