Then, in the bottom of the 3rd inning against David Price, Jeter hit a baseball 420 feet to left field that landed firmly in the bleachers, sending 48,103 fans to their feet as he joined Wade Boggs as the only players ever (at the time) to notch their 3,000th career hit via a home run.
It was a defining career moment (and in true Jeterian style, he also drove-in the winning run for the game with an eighth-inning RBI single).
Today marks five years from the hit and five years from a fan, Christian Lopez, catching the baseball from the historic home run and immediately returning it to Jeter. The Yankees gave Lopez a bevy of gear and tickets for the rest of the season.
When Steiner Sports and our friends at Modell's Sporting Goods learned of Lopez's student loan debt, CEO Brandon Steiner and Mitch Modell stepped in to help and rewarded Christian for his selflessness. There was even a short time where Christian worked at the Steiner Sports offices and we released baseballs signed by Price, Jeter and Lopez to commemorate the moment.
