Mike Piazza's Historic Post-9/11 Home Run Happened on this Day in 2001

As tragic as the circumstances were behind the memorable moment at Shea Stadium on September 21, 2001, Mike Piazza propelling the New York Mets to a win in the first baseball game in New York City after the attacks on September 11th will hold as one of the most iconic moments in the history of sports.

Piazza's blast put the Mets ahead in the bottom of the eighth and as he ran around the basis it was as if he had a whole country on his back.

In a recent MLB Network Presents documentary, the new Hall of Famer Piazza said:

“I remember looking up and praying to God, saying, ‘Lord, please give me the strength to get through this, because I don’t know if I can,'” Piazza says in the clip. “It’s amazing, when you’re in the right place and the right time, and you believe in yourself and you have a lot of people pulling for you, and you feel it… It was just this incredible release of emotion, and I think it became evidently clear that people just wanted to cheer — cheer about something.
