On This Day: Giants Win First Super Bowl in Franchise History

Heading into the 1986 season the New York Giants were a favorite to win the Super Bowl after having made the playoffs the previous two seasons. 

The Giants dominated the regular season finishing 14-2. The team was lead by unanimous league MVP LB Lawrence Taylor. The defense finished second in the league in both points and yards allowed. Bill Parcells was also awarded NFL Coach of the Year.


The success continued for the Giants in the playoffs. The Giants defeated the San Francisco 49ers 49-3 in their first game, and then beat the Washington Redskins 17-0 in the NFC Championship. In the Super Bowl the Giants found themselves behind 10-9 at halftime to the Denver Broncos. The Giants responded with a 30 point second half and wound up winning 39-20 behind QB Phil Simms 22-25, 268 yards, and 3 TD performance.
