Mickey Mantle is the definition of a legend.

Nicknamed “The Mick”, Mickey Mantle, was born in Oklahoma to Lovell and Elvin Mantle. Mantle had an early love for the game of baseball, as he would take batting practice from his dad as a child in their yard. He would practice hitting right handed when his grandfather threw to him left handed and would bat left handed when his dad threw to him right handed.  Mantle was seen as a once in a generation athlete. In high school he was a basketball and football star as well, and was offered a scholarship to play halfback at the collegiate powerhouse, The University of Oklahoma.

After deciding to go with baseball he began his professional career by playing for the semi-professional Baxter Springs Whiz kids. While play for the Whiz Kids, New York Yankees scout Tom Greenwade came to a game to watch one of Mantle’s teammates. However, Mantle would hit three home runs in the game and the rest is history.

After just two years in the minor leagues, he made the major league’s and as he broke camp with the New York Yankees in 1951 as just a 19-year-old kid. Once Joe DiMaggio retired following Mantle’s rookie season, Mantle took over centerfield as was the next star for the sport’s best franchise. Mantle would be ridiculously consistent hitting well above .300 year in and year out while playing one of the best centerfield’s that the game has ever seen.

Mantle was also a winner. Over his 17-year career, he would make 20 all star games, lead the league in home runs 4 different times, be voted MVP three times, win a triple crown, be voted the male athlete of the year, and on top of that, he lead the Yankees to seven championships in an eleven year span.
