As a teenager, he played professionally with Alba Berlin for Basketball Bundesliga and was named the BBL Best German Young Player in 2019. With much promise, Wagner was a four-star recruit with the opportunity to play college basketball in the United States. The small forward followed his brother Moritz's footsteps and joined the Michigan Wolverines under head coach Juwan Howard. With a solid 11.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, Wagner was named to the 2020 Big Ten All-Freshman team. He improved his sophomore year by scoring 12.5 points per game to go with 6.5 rebounds per game and leading the team with 35 steals. With a number one seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament, Wagner helped lead the Wolverines to the Elite Eight.
